Building and architecture flourished throughtout the Roman Empire. The Romans discovered new techniques to solve problems but also to impress the world. They built aqueducts to bring water into their cities and towns, grand baths for cleansing and socialising and elaborate villas for the cream of their society. In this book, scientist and archaeologist Tony Rook takes the reader through Roman building techniques. He explores the structures that were found throughout the Roman Empire, including roads, bridges and aqueducts as well as the Romans' answer to under-floor heating - the hypocaust - and vaults, domes, tiles and pipes. Lavishly illustrated with stunning photographs and the author's own detailed line drawings, Roman Building techniques looks at Roman innovations, practices and materials in a thorough yet readable way.

A short but stunning look into how advanced Roman construction was. Many of the construction techniques in use today were first developed by the Romans nearly 2000 years ago! Anybody who works in the construction field will surely find this an interesting book.

Overall well-written but the author has a habit of snidely calling out minor errors made by archaeologists and other professions that detracts from an otherwise scholarly presentation. There is also a tendency to use roman names too liberally when simply saying "triangular tile" would make the description much easier to digest for someone not steeped in roman terminology.

As a structural engineer I appreciate the discussion of stresses and thrust lines but suspect those chapters may not be clear enough for the average reader. Thrust lines in particular are incredibly important in any masonry structure and well worth further research if you are interested in understanding how such buildings stand up (or fall down).
