"Twas the Night Before Christmas" is a poem first published anonymously in 1823 and generally attributed to Clement Clarke Moore, although the claim has also been made that it was written by Henry Livingston, Jr.

The poem, which has been called "arguably the best-known verses ever written by an American", is largely responsible for the conception of Santa Claus from the mid-nineteenth century to today, including his physical appearance, the night of his visit, his mode of transportation, the number and names of his reindeer, as well as the tradition that he brings toys to children.

On Christmas Eve night, while his wife and children sleep, a man awakens to noises outside his house. Looking out the window, he sees St. Nicholas in a sleigh pulled by eight reindeer. After flying on to the roof, the saint enters the house through the chimney, carrying a sack of toys with him. The man watches Nicholas filling the children's stockings hanging by the fire, and laughs to himself. They share a conspiratorial moment before the saint bounds up the chimney again. As he flies away, Nicholas wishes everyone a happy Christmas.

This amazingly animated book includes nine gorgeously illustrated pages.

Twas the Night Before Christmas edition by Clement Moore Children eBooks Reviews

Was looking for a version of TNBC as gifts to my cousins' kids, and I'm very particular about the artistry of illustrations. When I saw there was a Holly Hobbie version, I knew that was it! Was fond of her work back in the 70s, and this 2013 work shows her growth as an artist. The best part (explained in her comments at the back, and mentioned by M.B.'s 2015 review) is her visual expansion of the story through the eyes of a toddler. It will engage the youngest child who may not grasp the full text of the poem, but can understand the pictured tot who awakens and goes with the family cat to see what's going on. Holly Hobbie's brilliant illustration truly honors the spirit of this well-loved poem. I'll be keeping a copy for myself, too.
This book was very disappointing... I have an earlier edition of Tasha Tudors's "The Night Before Christmas", which I love so much, and was trying to buy a similar one for a family member. This does look like the pictures were by Tasha Tudor (there are corgis and owls...) but not when she was doing her work that we are familiar with. She used the other book for the ideas, there is the attempt to have similar pictures, but not only is the poem very condensed compared to the earlier book, the drawings are just not good, and Santa, still a "right jolly old elf", is downright scary! I do not recommend this book.

This is an over sized, board book reproduction, of the 1949 original golden book that we grandparents had when we were young- only this is sturdy so my little sister cannot tear out the pages in this one! Tho likely she has outgrown that habit, it's safe from the grandkids as well. We kept this one for ourselves, and is so big, we used it as part of the decor in our game room, which has an 'oldies' themed tree. It's app 9'' x 11'', seems to be a faithful repro of the original, the binding allows it to lay flat while reading, but possibly the binding may not hold up to abuse. Since it is special to us I wouldn't leave it in with the mass of books the little ones have anyway, but read it to them when they visit, perfect size for that. Am happy to see that the company seems to be bringing out some board book repros of the 'oldies but goodies' that we loved as kids, will be buying more, especially the over sized ones. The one downside for me that this book is made in China, would have gladly paid more for these old classics to be made here.
I wanted this classic book but also wanted it to last so I bought a board book. A board book is like cardboard, hard pages from cover to cover. Vs a paperback that’s printed on paper cover to cover. Vs a hard cover book that has paper pages but the front and back covers are cardboard and hard. One thing I don’t do is look at dimensions because I can’t envision how big that is compared to something common. If someone were to review this book and say “this book is about half the size of a regular cereal box” I’d see that it’s an okay sized book. I put this on my 2 month old baby for photos but you can see how small it is. I also compared it to a box of wipes. It's smaller width wise but taller height wise.

The pages are all hard since it’s a board book and none stuck together. The only complaint I have is that it’s pretty dark. I can understand its a night time book so everything is dark and they added light to the book. Christmas lights, Santa glowing, the stars etc and of course classic with all the words and etc. But seriously, my eyes aren’t the greatest and they’ll only get worse so I was struggling to engage with this book while reading. The words are clear the pictures are just dark even with the light added in the illustration to me. I added a photo with flash on and off. It doesn't seem super dark in the photos but up close I was squinting a little. With that said though, I think this is a staple book to have in every child’s collection!
I always wanted to own this book for my toddler and I was afraid the graphics wouldn't be that great, but it is so amazing. I can't wait to read him this for Christmas! Just the version of it I was looking for!
