IT'S GOTTA HURT is a biography of a colorful folk hero of the Ohio high school football scene.
Robert ‘Smokey’ Wion coached football in four Ohio, and one Indiana towns from the 1950s through the 1970s. He has to this day remained a totally unforgettable character in all those towns.
Coach Wion was certainly successful at his chosen profession, having been selected coach of the year at each of his school conferences for a total of seven times. He won conference titles at each school a total of eleven championships. He was selected to coach the Ohio All-Star game twice and was inducted into the Ohio High School Hall of Fame in 1980
Smokey’s job however, served only as the vehicle which allowed his unique character and personality to stamp its indelible mark on the lives of hundreds of players and people associated with the game of football.
His quick wit and bizarre unchecked sense of humor, combined with his genuine love for all his boys and the game of football, won the hearts of players, parents, fans, associates, and friends across the Ohio valley.
This biography begins at the Coach’s retirement celebration and weaves its way through his life story by both, presenters at the retirement roast, and his own words shared with this author.
On rare occasions there walks through life a man who has a totally positive influence on the lives of others—Coach Wion was such a man. His is a story that fairly screams to be told. His story will twang the heartstrings and pound the funny bones of all who should know this man as his players do.

Unfortunately I never met Coach Wion, but had heard a few stories about him when I moved to the area. Remembering some of the antics and tales relayed, I picked up an ebook copy when a friend said it was available. The book is full of football tales and funny stories centering around Coach Wion, and the players of the teams he coached over the years. Although a good read, if I’d have had a chance to know the man, it would’ve been even better. Still, enjoyed it anyway. Readers that like football at the high school level, played or coached, or even a fan, and if you enjoy reading about jokes and antics played by a fun-loving man who really cared about people and his players, check out this book.

It Gotta Hurt Biography Robert 'Smokey' Wion eBook William O Weldy Reviews
I laughed...I cried...I was sad to reach end. Bill Weldy very successfully took be back to Ohio high school football the way no other has done it! I can't wait to read another of his books!
I personally knew Smokey Wion as a teenager and an adult. This book made me laugh because Smokey was full of humor, it made me cry because Martins Ferry, OH was home and never the same after Smokey left. This book depicts him to the core of who he was, how he loved not only his boys but his students and friends. Sure wish the author would have talked to some of his close personal friends in MF to see how he was off the field, out of the classroom and just Smokey the friend. He and Leah were the best of the best!
Although this book was self-published and did not have the benefit of a professional editor, the stories of a remarkable man and one hell of a football coach, ring with intensity and humor. It is the story of the man and his boys that are important. I played for Smokey in his first coaching job and he's been my friend ever since.
As a Martins Ferry alumna, Class of '63, I can still see Coach Wion in his cramped office, at a pep rally before a game, and running the sidelines at the stadium. He was a favorite of many and I could not wait to walk down memory lane with this great account of his life and its impact on so many people.
It was a thoroughly enjoyable read for me. I played for coach Wion at Martins Ferry High School. I was on the tail end of the 32 game win streak. He was tough, but fair. He made two a days very tough, and yes we would shout, "It's gotta hurt! " If you made it thru two a days, you made the team.He would not cut anyone who was working his tail off. You then deserved to be a "Rider! "
This book is a wonderful story about a football coach I'll never forget. He not only taught the game but also taught the players discipline, integrity, humor, morals and a world that awaited them after high school. Please put this on your list of books to read. I plan to ask my grandchildren to read this book. Coach "Smokey" Wion was a great man and his wife, Leah, was the pedestal on which he stood.
I read the original book and laughed and cried as I remembered this wonderful man and some of the antics he pulled. I was fortunate to have played football for him at his first high school in Covington, Ohio. I must admit that I did my best to keep him out of the Ohio High School Hall of Fame. Bill does a great job of bringing the coach's stories to life and I'll cry and laugh again, but this time it will be because I can't call him and tell him what he meant to me.
Unfortunately I never met Coach Wion, but had heard a few stories about him when I moved to the area. Remembering some of the antics and tales relayed, I picked up an ebook copy when a friend said it was available.
